Squares of Warsaw

From the side of ul. On Długa there is a church of Popijar, ob. cathedral half of the Polish Army. Of Our Lady Queen of Poland. Originally built in 1642 r. with the sum of King Władysław IV for the Piarist Order, was destroyed in 1656 r. by the Swedes. In years 1660-1712 a new one was built, a brick church founded by King Jan Kazimierz, probably according to the design. Józef Fontana. In years 1835-37 rebuilt into an orthodox church according to the design. A. Gołoński and A.. Corraziego. In the interwar period and from 1991 r. the seat of the Field Curia of the Polish Army is located next to the building, and the temple was elevated to the rank of a cathedral. The church is a baroque single-nave building, with side chapels and a two-tower façade. Inside the cathedral, there are numerous plaques dedicated mainly to soldiers who died in World War II.

From Krasińskich Square we head towards ul. Long, towards the west. The building at no. 29 was established in the 17th century. from the reconstruction of the manor house. W 2 half. 18th century. it was transformed into a palace for Fryderyk Kabryt – Warsaw banker. W 1 half. XIX w. at the Hotel Polski. The building has a monumental classicist façade. The building at no. 38/40 is the Palace of the Four Winds. Built at the end of the 17th century. for Stanisław Kleinpoldt-Małopolski

– Braclaw substole, completely rebuilt in 2 half. 18th century. It is a baroque building with elements of classicism. It consists of a three-story main body and two side wings situated perpendicular to it, forming the border of the courtyard of honor. The courtyard is separated from the street by a fence with a gate, bars and four pillars. Stone figures of mythical winds are placed on the pillars (oil), from which the popular name of the palace comes.

Behind the intersection with ul. Ghetto Heroes (under no. 52) the Arsenal rises. Built in 1 half. 17th century. for the purpose of a weapons depot. The reconstruction was made in 1 half. XIX w. 29 November 1830 r. The arsenal was conquered by the participants of the November Uprising, and the weapon was used to fight the Russian troops. In years 1832-1935 it housed a prison. Then it was the seat of the municipal archive in Warsaw. 26 brand 1943 r. a loud action of the Gray Ranks unit took place in its vicinity, during which he was released 25 prisoners, and among them the scoutmaster Jan Bytnar pseud. „Rudy”. This action is commemorated by a stone with a monument and a plaque. After World War II, the arsenal housed the Contemporary Art Gallery, and from 1959 r. is the seat of the State Archaeological Museum.
