The route allows you to visit some of the more 40 Warsaw cemeteries, on which many people deserved for Warsaw are buried, known in Poland and in the world, on which there are many artistically valuable tombstones. The route is close in length 5 km, however, due to the time-consuming nature of visiting individual cemeteries, it should be divided into several stages.

We start our walk in front of the main entrance to the municipal cemetery – Powązki (formerly military). It was founded in 1912 r. as an Orthodox garrison cemetery for deceased Russian soldiers. W 1915 r. The deceased in Warsaw hospitals were also buried here. In the interwar period, the area of ​​the cemetery was enlarged to 16,5 ha. The main avenue was then marked out and the whole area was divided into quarters. W 1921 r. those who died during World War I and during the war were transferred to the cemetery 1920 r. Later, the quarters of the participants of the January Uprising were established here. During World War II, the city's defenders were buried here in September 1939 r., participants of underground groups, and from 1941 r. also German soldiers. W 1945 r. Here, the ashes of Polish Army soldiers and Warsaw insurgents were transferred from exceptionally numerous graves in the city. W 1945 r. the cemetery was handed over to the army, from the south. east. a new municipal cemetery for civilians was established. W 1964 r. both of the cemeteries have an area 24,3 ha took over the city and created a common municipal cemetery. The facility has been redesigned, tidy accommodation, and the Avenue of the Meritorious was created from a part of the main alley. In this cemetery are buried, inter alia,. party and state activists from the communist era: Boleslaw Bierut, Władysław Gomułka and Aleksander Zawadzki, generals: Karol Świerczewski, Tadeusz Kutuwie, Victor Thommee, scientists: Oskar Long, people of culture and art: Władysław Broniewski, Xawery Dunikowski, Julian Tuwim, Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński, Leon Schiller and Tadeusz Łomnicki. Polish soldiers who died in September are buried in separate quarters 1939 r., Polish soldiers died in Praga in 1944 r., Warsaw insurgents by main groups.
